Nick Frankle RAGM Pres. 2019 - 2020

Rotarians have always been peace builders.

As early as 1917, Paul Harris challenged Rotarians to talk about peace noting that

"it takes more moral courage to speak about peace than it does to talk about war"

.  Through Rotary's history - our presence at the formation of the United Nations; our peace centers; our global commitment to eradicate polio - Rotarians have contributed to a more peaceful community and a more peaceful world.

Peace is not only an absence of conflict.  One of the major inhibitors to peace is extreme poverty which often results in poor health, and pervasive hopelessness.

As Rotarians, we engage every day in activities that remove inhibitors and help create an environment of peace by supporting education and literacy, clean water, sanitation and hygiene, access to healthcare and community economic development.

Microfinance has built a solid track record as a critical tool in the fight against poverty. The rapid growth of microfinance has reached over 130 million clients over the past fifteen years.  Microfinance has also been a powerful catalyst for empowering women. Yet it still reaches less than 20 percent of its potential market among the world's three billion or more poor.

The Rotarian Action Group for Microfinance and Community Development (RAGM) provides the tools and advisors needed to help you implement successful, sustainable microfinance projects. RAGM can assist you with best practices, educational materials, funding sources and mentoring strategies. Microfinance projects create other forms of poverty alleviation and peace-building through opportunities for improved health, continuing education and empowered beneficiaries. RAGM, through its advocacy of community development and its support of successful and sustainable microfinance projects, can help you build peace in your local community and in communities around the world.

The Rotary World Peace Conference will be held in Ontario, California, USA on January 17 and 18, 2020.

The World Peace Conference brings together experts that will present solutions to major issues that are occurring in our personal lives, homes, schools, businesses, and communities around the world.  You will have the opportunity to interact with leaders from health care, academia, government, public safety, religions, business, and communities.   The format will allow for action plans to be developed such that real and measurable actions can be undertaken when attendees return home. In addition, the conference will showcase lessons learned and positive change that have occurred in the four years, since the Rotary World Peace Conference 2016.

RAGM will have both a booth and a breakout session at the World Peace Conference 2020 where you can learn more about creating sustainable microfinance projects in you community and exchange ideas with others interested in community development as a pathway to peace.

You are a Rotarian interested in expanding economic opportunities to all; you are already building peace.   Please plan to join us in Ontario, California on January 17-18, 2020, for two days of learning how you and the members of your club can continue your commitment to a more peaceful world.
